Description

Michael V. Fox, long-time professor in the Dept. of Hebrew and Semitic Studies at the University of Wisconsin—Madison, is known both for his scholarship and his teaching. As the editors of this volume in his honor note, the care and sensitivity of his reading of the Hebrew text are well known, and he lavishes equal attention on his own writing, to the benefit of all who read his work, which now includes the first of two volumes in the Anchor Bible commentary on Proverbs (the next volume is in preparation), as well as monographs on wisdom literature in ancient Israel and elsewhere, and many articles. The rigor that he brought to his own work he also inflicted on his students, and they and a number of his colleagues honor him with their contributions to this volume.

Contributors include: Menahem Haran, Kelvin G. Friebel, Cynthia L. Miller, Theron Young, Adele Berlin, William P. Brown, James L. Crenshaw, John A. Cook, Robert D. Holmstedt, Shamir Yona, Christine Roy Yoder, Carol R. Fontaine, Nili Shupak, Victor Avigdor Horowitz, Tova Forti, Richard L. Schultz, J. Cheryl Exum, Dennis R. Magary, Theodore J. Lewis, Sidnie White Crawford, Ronald L. Troxel, Karl V. Kutz, Heidi M. Szpek, Claudia V. Camp, Johann Cook, Leonard Greenspoon, Stephen G. Burnett, Carol A. Newsom, Shemaryahu Talmon, and Frederick E. Greenspahn.

The book is organized around themes that reflect Prof. Fox's interests and work: Part 1: "Seeking Out Wisdom and Concerned with Prophecies" (Sir 39:1): Studies in Biblical Texts"; Part 2: "Preserving the Sayings of the Famous" (Sir 39:2): Text, Versions, and Method.

Reviews

"Seeking Out the Wisdom of the Ancients is a fitting tribute to Michael V. Fox. He is widely acknowledged as one of the foremost authorities on wisdom literature, and his expertise in other areas of research is well established. The contributors to this volume comprise both senior scholars who are friends and colleagues of Professor Fox and junior members of the field who studied under him at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. The articles in this book (thirty, in total) reflect Fox's long standing engagement with wisdom literature but are by no means limited to this topic. One discernible pattern in the volume is that the scholarship produced by students of Fox displays a rigorous attention to linguistic and grammatical issues. Their papers provide an impression of Fox's accomplishments as a teacher...Seeking Out the Wisdom of the Ancients contains a wealth of knowledge and scholarship. There is a great deal that one can learn from this book. Its diverse articles make valid contributions to numerous topics of study. --Matthew Goff, Florida State University, in Hebrew Studies 47, 2006

"This Festschrift for Professor Michael Fox is a rich and valuable collection, containing essays by both established and emerging scholars. . . . While one would expect a degree of unevenness in the quality of the essays in such a wide-ranging volume, the quality here is generally extremely high, many of the authors making significant original contributions to biblical research. This volume is a fitting tribute to a scholar whose publications continue to offer so much of value to students and scholars of the Hebrew Bible, and it should be widely consulted by scholars and graduate students alike." --James E. Harding (University of Otago), in Journal of Jewish Studies, Spring 2007.

"All in all, this volume is a fitting tribute to one of the leading authorities on wisdom literature, a scholar whose work is not only rigorous and meticulous but bold and creative." --Stuart Lasine, (Wichita State University, Wichita, KS) in Catholic Biblical Quarterly 69 (2007).

"This Festschrift for Michael V. Fox, Jay C. and Ruth Halls-Bascom Professor of Hebrew at the University of Wisconsin, brings together thirty essays written by former students, colleagues, and friends and is divided into two main sections, one focusing on the study of biblical texts (predominantly texts belonging to the genre of wisdom literature with the occasional foray into poetry and the book of Ezekiel) and the second dealing with textual and methodological issues. As is to be expected in a volume honoring an esteemed scholar, the editors have included a concise tribute to the honoree (pp. ix-xi). Furthermore, a useful overview and bibliography of the publications of Michael V. Fox has been prepared by Lawrence J. Mykytiuk (pp. xiii-xxiv). As is customary in Eisenbrauns publications, two indexes are included (authors and Scripture) and as always the publication quality of the volume is exemplary. . . . In the final count, this Festschrift is a fitting offering for one of the leading scholars of biblical wisdom literature, and its contributions are well researched, often innovative, in fruitful conversation with other (including the honoree's) scholarship, and should be a must for all scholars interested in the study of biblical wisdom." --Gerald A. Klingbeil, Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies, Silang, Cavite, Philippines, in Journal of the American Oriental Society 127.2 (2007).
